Dr. El-Miedany Biography

After receiving his medical degree from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt in 1984, Dr. El Miedany completed an internship at the University Hospitals. He furthered his training in rheumatology at the Centre for Rheumatic Diseases, Royal Infirmary, Glasgow University; where he carried out his MD thesis about pulmonary affection in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and whether it is genetically related. Dr. El Miedany got Diploma in internal medicine, Master degree and MD in Rheumatology and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London). Dr. El Miedany was appointed Professor of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation, Ain Shams University, Egypt. He continues his scientific work and research activities with his colleagues in the university. He has also led the teaching and training of Musculsoekeltal US in the University. He is currently a consultant rheumatologist and lead clinician metabolic bone disease in England. Dr. El Miedany is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), American College of Rheumatology, British Society for Rheumatology and is a regional coordinator for the Paediatric Rheumatology International Organization (PRINTO).

Dr. El Miedany is a lead figure in Musculoskeletal ultrasonography, a growing speciality in the rheumatology field. He has published several manuscripts studying this tool of assessment. Introducing musculoskeletal ultrasonography into the daily rheumatology clinic has attracted several GPs to refer their patients for assessment and management under the care of Dr. El Miedany.

As a part of his academic role, Dr. El Miedany has been appointed "Lead clinician for undergrduate medical education". Since 2003, he has been involved with teaching year 3 and year 5 medical students as well as OSCE examination. In addition, he gives regular lectures to F1, F2, as well as CMT traingin doctors. He has been invited to several SpRs and Specialist nurses educational meetings nationally. Also he is an active member in the local MRCP teaching program. He has shared in several GP educational meetings. For the patients, Dr. El Miedany team was the one of the first rheumatology centers in South Thams region, to set up a dedicated patient education service in cooperation with the Department of Health, England. Dr. El Miedany has special interest in Simulated teaching and has developed it for both under- as well as postgraduate doctors.

Over the past 10 years, Dr. El Miedany carried out more than 42 audits, reflecting the hard work performed by the whole team to develop the service provided to the patients and how it met the national guidelines as well as the regional recommendations. For their valuable outcomes, most of these audits were presented in the Britis Society for Rheumatology conferences and the team became a flag ship for other centers developing their services.

The rheumatology service provided by Dr. El Miedany's team in England, has been highly appreciated by the patients who rated the service as "excellent" on the NHS patient choices website. Also his rheumatology service was chosen the "Centre of Excellence" for the south of England (one of 3 centres in England). A meeting was held in 2011 where the rheumatologists and rheumatology specialist nurses were be invited to view how the service has been running and how recent trends in rheumatology has been included in the standard clinical practice. Professor El Miedany, has more than 100 publications in international peer reviewed rheumatology journals as well as international conferences. He has also lectured in most of the prestigious international conferences and was invited to write review articles in rheumatology journals. Currently he is associate editor for the BMC Musculoskeletal journal.

For his outstanding contribution in rheumatology clinical, academic and research fields, Dr. El Miedany was nominated the International Health Professional of the year 2004 by the IBC, Cambridge, England.
